Wordplay with Friends
Aloha & Happy Friday, Reader!
Part of the fun for me in the exchange of meeting people is learning new lingo, dialect and common phrases they use in their daily life. Some may be either completely unfamiliar to me or mildly familiar, based on my past experiences, which often stems from movies.
Swapping phrases can be so fun, too! Often, my friends and I poke fun at taboo phrases and have fun in convo. Conversations in real life/present time are the best! Second best, is catching comedians' acts online or better, in person.
In early September of 2024, I met a very cool woman, Kaley, who performed some raps for me and wow... she is incredibly talented! We almost instantly bonded, sharing stories of our past, feeling deep empathy for each other’s journey and connected on many topics. I was so impressed with not only her rebound from some seriously rocky times, but her dedication to finding the ideal healthy path for rebuilding her life. And wow, she can seriously take on pull-ups!
On the subject of wordplay, she introduced me to a type of dictionary, I hadn't seen before: "The Complete Rhyming Dictionary” by Clement Wood and also very kindly drafted me up a few pages of beautifully written street slang. She included some words specific to San Francisco/NorCal, which reminded me of my volunteering days in the Tenderloin 15 years prior.
Truly a gem and hopeful light in this world, I'm so grateful my path crossed with Kaley’s and I hope to see her again one day. We discussed a possible reunion in Southern California, so we’ll see!
May you have a lovely weekend!
With Aloha,
Heidi
